Mindfulness | 5 Ways Mindfulness Can Serve Your Weight Loss Goals
If you’re reading this blog, good! This means you’re taking time to understand mindfulness, which is key to getting you through the crazy holiday season and stepping into 2018 like a champ. It's also a valuable practice if you've got any weight loss or nutrition goals around this time of year. For those of you looking for some nutritional guidance, here are 5 simple ways to incorporate mindfulness into your daily eating habits. I promise you, it will change the way you look at food and experience life.
1. Enjoy Every Bite.
Try to set aside your meal times so you can sit and intentionally enjoy your food. Don’t eat dinner with your phone on the table, the TV on, or your computer. Turn off all distractions and really, truly eat your meal. Enjoy the space and the flavors of the delicious, healthy meal in front of you. By shutting down the noise of social media, texts, and busy distractions, you’ll feel more satisfied with your meal and - get this - you’re less likely to overeat. #Taste
2. See the Beauty in the Food You Eat.
Next time you’re at the grocery store, admire the colors, textures, and shapes in whole, nutritious foods. It might sound silly, but there is so much beauty in the food we eat, and we often take it for granted. Also, try to incorporate a wide array of seasonal fruits & veggies into each meal for visual appeal, such as: bright pomegranate seeds, ruby red beets, golden butternut squash, green brussel sprouts, brilliant orange mandarins & grapefruits. These are just a few of the foods that will benefit your body & mind during the winter months. #See
3. Listen to the Sounds Around You.
Take time to pay attention to the sounds of your surroundings while you're eating or enjoying a beverage. Whether you're grabbing a quick lunch at the Milwaukee Public Market, having dinner & drinks with friends at your favorite local restaurant, or enjoying a meal in the comfort of your own home, soak in the sounds of the season. Allow your meal to become an uplifting experience during your weight loss journey. #Listen
4. Intentionally Feel Grateful for Your Life & Body.
Cold days & snowy nights often tempt us to reach for comfort food, which is fine; however, we need to be careful about overindulging as this leads to unwanted weight gain. Instead, slowly consume these warm, hearty dishes, like: casseroles, stews, and shepherd's pies. Feel the comfort they bring to your body. Take a moment to express your gratitude for the ability to feed your body & soul.
It's also helpful for some people to keep a gratitude journal. Each night before bed, write down three things you're thankful for - and be truly thankful. It can be as simple as “Today, I am thankful for my warm home, healthy food, and my strong body.”#Feel
5. Smell the Spices.
Next time you’re cooking, smell the spices you’re using and take a moment to enjoy the memories they may bring to you. Certain herbs & spices immediately bring back nostalgic memories, especially around this time of year. Rosemary, sage, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and other aromatic elements will also lift your dishes to a new level (without adding unwanted calories!). #Smell
